Mohare Danda Trek

Mohare Danda Trek

1 Day

Overview

Mohare Danda Trek is a scenic, moderate trek nestled in the Annapurna region of Nepal, ideal for travelers seeking mountain views without the crowds of classic routes. Sitting at an altitude of around 3,300 meters, it offers a spectacular 360 degree panorama of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Machhapuchhre ranges. The trail winds through charming Magar and Gurung villages, dense rhododendron and oak forests, and terraced farmland, giving trekkers an authentic taste of local culture. Typically completed in 5 to 7 days, it starts from Pokhara and passes through villages like Tikhedhunga, Ghorepani, and Ulleri. This trek is popular among those with limited time who still want the “top of the world” Himalayan experience. It’s also known for supporting community based tourism through eco lodges run by local cooperatives.

It is family friendly. The trek’s highlight is the sunrise viewpoint at Mohare Danda itself, where golden light gradually illuminates the entire Annapurna range, creating a breathtaking spectacle worth the early wake up call. Along the way, trekkers pass through Ghorepani, which connects to the famous Poon Hill viewpoint, allowing many itineraries to combine both destinations for a richer mountain experience. The forests here burst into vibrant red and pink blooms during spring (March to April), making that season especially popular, while autumn (September to November) offers the clearest skies and most stable weather. Accommodation along the route ranges from community lodges to teahouses, most offering basic but comfortable rooms, hot meals, and warm hospitality. The trail is well marked and doesn’t require technical climbing skills, making it suitable for beginners and families with moderate fitness. Since it avoids the busier Annapurna Base Camp route, hikers enjoy a quieter, more peaceful journey through unspoiled nature. A permit, typically the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit) and TIMS card, is required before starting. Overall, Mohare Danda combines cultural immersion, forest trails, and jaw dropping Himalayan vistas into one unforgettable short trek.

About Mohare Danda Trek

Mahabir Pun’s invention of wireless technology in the Annapurna region transformed the lives of the local communities. To further promote sustainable tourism and improve the economic standard of remote villages, Mahabir Pun initiated the Mohare Danda Trek. The Trek was named after the Mohare Danda territory in Nepal. The hotels are run by the local communities, which helps to generate income. Tucked away in the heart of the Annapurna region, Mohare Danda is one of Nepal’s best kept secrets, a trek that delivers all the drama of the Himalayas without the crowded trails of its famous neighbors. Perched at roughly 3,300 meters, its summit unfolds into a jaw dropping amphitheater of peaks, Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, and Nilgiri rising like silver giants against the sky.

The journey there is just as captivating as the destination, winding through fragrant rhododendron and oak forests, past cascading streams, and into timeworn Magar and Gurung villages where prayer flags flutter and locals still farm the same terraced hillsides their ancestors did generations ago. What sets this trek apart is its community driven spirit, many of the eco lodges along the route are owned and run by local cooperatives, meaning every meal and every night’s stay directly supports the villages you pass through.

But the real magic happens at dawn. Waking before sunrise to climb the final stretch to Mohare Danda’s summit is an experience trekkers rarely forget, as the first rays of light creep across the horizon and set the entire Annapurna range ablaze in gold and pink. It’s a moment of pure stillness, no crowds jostling for photos, just you, the mountains, and a silence so complete you can hear your own breath. Beyond the summit, the trail keeps surprising you, in spring, from March to April, the forests explode into a riot of red and pink rhododendron blooms, turning the path into a living tunnel of color, while autumn, from September to November, brings crystal clear skies and the sharpest mountain views of the year. The trek is refreshingly accessible too, no technical climbing skills required, just steady legs and a sense of adventure, making it perfect for first time trekkers, families, and seasoned hikers alike. Along the way, cozy teahouses offer hearty dal bhat, warm blankets, and genuine mountain hospitality, while permits like the ACAP and TIMS card ensure the region’s fragile ecosystem stays protected for years to come. In short, Mohare Danda isn’t just a trek, it’s an unforgettable encounter with the Himalayas at their most authentic.

Mohare Danda Trek Route

The Mohare Danda trek typically begins in Pokhara, from where trekkers take a scenic drive of about an hour and a half to Nayapul, the official starting point of the trail, passing through green hills and the Modi Khola valley along the way. From Nayapul, the trail follows the Bhurungdi Khola river through Birethanti, a lively village with checkpoints, shops, and the confluence of two rivers, before gradually climbing towards Tikhedhunga, a small settlement known for its stone steps and riverside teahouses where trekkers often spend their first night. The next stretch is one of the toughest of the entire trek, a relentless uphill climb of stone steps leading to Ulleri, a Magar village perched on a ridge and famous for its endless staircase, said to have over three thousand steps, offering incredible views back down the valley once you reach the top. From Ulleri, the trail eases into forested terrain, passing through Banthanti and Nangethanti, two peaceful hamlets surrounded by dense rhododendron, oak, and magnolia forests, before reaching Ghorepani, a bustling trekking hub with wide views of Annapurna South and Dhaulagiri, and the launch point for the famous Poon Hill sunrise excursion that many trekkers add to their itinerary.

Beyond Ghorepani, the trail diverges from the busier Poon Hill route and climbs through quieter forest paths toward Deurali, a small ridge top settlement with basic lodges and sweeping views, before finally arriving at Mohare Danda itself, the trek’s highlight and highest point, where a sunrise viewpoint offers a full 360 degree panorama of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges along with distant views of Manaslu on clear days. From Mohare Danda, most itineraries descend through Kalikasthan or Ghorepani again, passing through terraced farmland and traditional villages, before continuing toward Ghandruk, one of the largest and most picturesque Gurung villages in the region, known for its stone paved streets, traditional architecture, and rich Gurung culture and museum. The final leg of the journey retraces the trail from Ghandruk down through Kimche and back to Nayapul, following forested paths and river crossings, before trekkers take the return drive back to Pokhara, completing a loop that blends dramatic mountain scenery, dense forest ecosystems, and authentic village life at every stage of the journey.
