Why Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek?

The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake combines two of the most iconic experiences in the Himalayas into one extraordinary journey. You will walk the classic Annapurna Circuit and then divert to Tilicho Lake, one of the highest lakes accessible on foot anywhere in the world.

What makes this trek truly special is the incredible diversity you experience. You begin in lush subtropical valleys with terraced fields and waterfalls, gradually climb through pine and rhododendron forests, and emerge into the stark, windswept high-altitude desert of Manang and Mustang. The trail takes you through villages influenced by Tibetan culture, where prayer flags flutter in the wind, and monks chant mantras in ancient monasteries.

Tilicho Lake itself is a magical destination. At 4,919 metres, its brilliant turquoise waters reflect the towering peaks that surround it, creating one of the most breathtaking sights in the Himalayas. The lake sits beneath the massive rock walls of Tilicho Peak and the Annapurna range, making it a photographer’s paradise.

After returning from Tilicho, you rejoin the main circuit trail and continue toward the legendary Thorong La Pass at 5,416 metres. Crossing this pass is the crowning achievement of the trek, a challenging ascent rewarded with panoramic views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountain ranges.

The cultural journey is equally remarkable. You will pass through Gurung, Manangi, and Thakali villages, each with their own traditions and hospitality. The sacred town of Muktinath, revered by both Hindus and Buddhists, is a spiritual highlight. From there, you descend into Lower Mustang, a dramatic high-altitude desert with apple orchards and ancient cave dwellings.

This trek suits anyone seeking the ultimate Himalayan experience combining diverse landscapes, rich culture, and the thrill of visiting one of the world’s highest lakes while crossing one of its most famous passes.

Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek Overview

The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Jagat, a small village on the banks of the Marsyangdi River. From Jagat, you follow the river upstream through terraced fields and traditional villages, gradually gaining altitude.

The trail passes through Dharapani, Chame, and Upper Pisang, each offering a glimpse into local life and increasingly dramatic mountain views. As you climb, the vegetation changes from subtropical forest to alpine scrub, and the air becomes noticeably thinner.

Upper Pisang is a significant waypoint, offering spectacular views of Annapurna II and the surrounding peaks. From Upper Pisang, you continue to Manang, a large Tibetan-influenced village at 3,540m. Manang is your acclimatization base, and you will spend an extra day here to adjust to the altitude.

During your rest day in Manang, you can explore the village, visit the Himalayan Rescue Association clinic for an altitude talk, or take a short hike to higher elevation for better acclimatization.

From Manang, the trek diverts to Tilicho Lake. You will first trek to Sirikhark (3,900m), then continue to Tilicho Base Camp (4,150m). The following day, you hike to Tilicho Lake (4,919m) and return to Sirikhark. The lake’s brilliant turquoise waters reflecting the surrounding peaks create one of the most magical sights in the Himalayas.

After returning from Tilicho, you rejoin the main circuit trail and continue through Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi. The following morning, you cross Thorong La Pass (5,416m) and descend to Muktinath (3,760m), a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists.

From Muktinath, you trek or drive to Jomsom (2,720m), a windy town famous for its apple orchards. You then drive to Pokhara (827m) for a well-deserved rest by the lake before returning to Kathmandu for your final departure.

The trek is graded hard due to the altitude, the Tilicho Lake side trip, and the Thorong La Pass crossing. However, it is achievable for anyone with good fitness, proper acclimatization, and determination. The teahouse infrastructure means you do not need to carry camping equipment, and experienced guides will support you throughout the journey.

This route is ideal for experienced trekkers, photographers, and anyone seeking the ultimate Himalayan adventure combining two iconic destinations in one journey.
