Classic Annapurna Circuit Trek

Trekking the Annapurna Circuit from Jagat to Birethanti in December was an incredible experience. The simplicity of life on the trail—walking, eating, and sleeping for two weeks—was something I quickly came to appreciate. Each day had a steady rhythm, and there was a real satisfaction in covering ground with nothing but a pack on my back and the mountains stretching ahead. The clear skies and crisp air made for perfect trekking conditions, and while the climbs were challenging at times, the sheer scale and beauty of the Himalayas made every step worthwhile.

Our guide, Suya, was fantastic—always looking out for our well-being, making sure we stayed hydrated, and helping us adjust to the altitude. His deep knowledge of the region and its culture added another layer to the experience. The porters were just as memorable, not only for their strength but for their humor. In the evenings, we’d sit around the fire in the teahouses, playing cards and laughing at their endless jokes. Those moments of warmth and camaraderie were just as much a part of the journey as the days on the trail.

Dal Bhat quickly became a staple, and I never got tired of it. The mix of lentils, rice, and vegetables was the perfect fuel for long days of walking, and I finally understood the truth behind “Dal Bhat power, 24 hour.” Meals were a welcome break, a time to rest and take in the surroundings, whether in a bustling village or a quiet teahouse perched on the mountainside.

Crossing Thorong La Pass was the toughest but most rewarding part of the trek. The thin air made the ascent slow and deliberate, but reaching the top and seeing the mountains stretch endlessly in every direction was unforgettable. The descent into Muktinath felt like entering a new world, with different landscapes and a growing sense of accomplishment. Walking all the way down to Birethanti, the gradual return to lower altitudes brought a strange mix of relief and nostalgia. The journey had been challenging, beautiful, and, in the end, almost meditative—just the mountains, the trail, and the steady rhythm of putting one foot in front of the other.
