Tamang Heritage Langtang Trek Overview

Our fourteen-day Tamang Heritage Trail With Langtang Valley Trek combines village walking through Gatlang, Tatopani, Thuman and Briddim with the mountain trails above Langtang Village. You continue to Kyanjin Gompa for two nights, with planned daytime hikes to Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri. The journey begins and ends with road travel between Kathmandu and Syabrubesi.

From Syabrubesi, the walking stages climb through terraced fields and villages towards Gatlang. Continue to Tatopani, cross wooded hills towards Thuman and descend before climbing to Briddim. Stone houses, village lanes, prayer wheels and monasteries introduce the Tamang communities along this route. Lodge stays leave time to notice local farming and daily life, while the hills offer views towards Ganesh Himal and the surrounding ranges in clear weather.

Beyond Briddim, you join the Langtang Valley trail and continue through shaded forest to Lama Hotel. The route follows the river towards Langtang Village, where rebuilt homes and lodges stand beneath the mountains. Continue through open grazing areas to Kyanjin Gompa. Its monastery and surrounding slopes form the base for your two planned viewpoint hikes.

Kyanjin Gompa is the highest overnight stop, at approximately 3,870 metres. The ascent from Lama Hotel to Langtang Village gains substantial sleeping height, while the viewpoint hikes climb higher again. These upper days require pacing and assessment of your health. The guide adjusts the hikes when needed. Prepare for consecutive walking days, steep climbs and uneven paths throughout the journey.

Tamang Heritage Langtang Trek Highlights

Hike towards Kyanjin Ri for mountain and glacier views, returning to Kyanjin Gompa afterwards.
Make a longer return hike to Tserko Ri when health, weather and trail conditions allow it.
Combine the heritage villages with the upper valley, using road journeys between Kathmandu and Syabrubesi for access and return travel.

Tamang Heritage Langtang Trek Itinerary — Day by Day

Our fourteen-day itinerary combines the Tamang village trail with Langtang Valley and two planned viewpoint hikes. Walking times and distances are approximate; your pace, health, weather and trail conditions can affect each day’s schedule.

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Arrival — Approximately 1,400 m — Arrival in Kathmandu

Overnight altitude Approximately 1,400 m
Accommodation 3-star hotel in Kathmandu; room sharing as quoted
Meals Arrival-day meals at your own expense

Welcome to Nepal. Our representative meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport and accompanies you to your hotel. After you settle in, we review the trekking programme, check your equipment and discuss questions about the route and lodges.

Depending on your arrival time, you can explore nearby streets in Thamel or rest after your flight. We discuss final preparations before tomorrow's drive towards Syabrubesi and the start of your trek.

Day 2: Drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi

Drive — Approximately 1,550 m — 6–7 hours

Driving time Approximately 6–7 hours; allow longer for road conditions and traffic
Main activity Road journey from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi
Overnight altitude Approximately 1,550 m
Accommodation Lodge in Syabrubesi
Meals Kathmandu breakfast; other travel-day meals as quoted

We leave Kathmandu by road and travel towards Syabrubesi, the starting point for the Tamang Heritage Trail and Langtang Valley. Hillside villages and river valleys accompany the journey.

The winding road passes terraced slopes and roadside towns before reaching Syabrubesi. Traffic, road repairs and weather can change the arrival time. At the lodge, organise your daypack and keep your walking equipment ready for tomorrow's climb towards Gatlang.

Day 3: Trek from Syabrubesi to Gatlang

Trek — Approximately 2,200 m — 5 hours

Walking time Approximately 5 hours
Trek distance Approximately 13–14 km; varies with the walking route
Overnight altitude Approximately 2,200 m
Accommodation Village lodge in Gatlang
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Our first walking day climbs from Syabrubesi towards Gatlang. The route crosses cultivated hillsides and village paths, with views opening across the valley as we gain height above the road.

Take the uphill sections steadily while finding a comfortable walking pace. Gatlang's stone houses and terraced fields introduce the village setting of the heritage trail. After reaching the lodge, there is time to explore nearby lanes, notice local architecture, learn about local visiting customs and rest before tomorrow's journey towards Tatopani through the wooded hills.

Day 4: Trek from Gatlang to Tatopani

Trek — Approximately 2,607 m — 5–6 hours

Walking time Approximately 5–6 hours; longer on some trail variants
Trek distance Approximately 13 km
Overnight altitude Approximately 2,607 m
Accommodation Village lodge in Tatopani
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We leave Gatlang and follow paths across slopes, villages and forest towards Tatopani. Descents and climbs break up the day, so expect more effort than the difference between overnight heights suggests.

Tatopani is known for its bathing pools and hillside location. Any bathing visit depends on current water flow and local access, which the guide checks before arrival. Settle into the lodge and explore the surroundings, with time to rest after the day's climbs and prepare for tomorrow's walk towards Thuman.

Day 5: Trek from Tatopani to Thuman

Trek — Depends on the selected ridge route; Nagthali is around 3,165 m if included — 4–5 hours

Walking time Approximately 4–5 hours; allow 6–7 hours if walking via Nagthali
Trek distance Around 10 km; varies with the selected ridge route
Daytime high point Depends on the selected ridge route; Nagthali is around 3,165 m if included
Overnight altitude Approximately 2,400 m
Accommodation Village lodge in Thuman
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Today's route crosses wooded ridges between Tatopani and Thuman. Views towards Ganesh Himal and the Langtang ranges appear when weather clears, with forest sections providing a change from the open slopes.

The chosen ridge path affects both the length and the height of today's walk. The guide confirms the route, including whether conditions and the schedule allow Nagthali. We then descend towards Thuman, a Tamang village with stone houses and Buddhist prayer sites. Spend your evening at the lodge in Thuman.

Day 6: Trek from Thuman to Briddim

Trek — Approximately 2,230 m — 6–7 hours

Walking time Approximately 6–7 hours
Trek distance Approximately 15 km
Overnight altitude Approximately 2,230 m
Accommodation Village lodge or homestay in Briddim, as arranged
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We descend from Thuman towards the Bhote Koshi valley before climbing towards Briddim. The route combines village paths and forest, making this a full day despite similar overnight elevations.

Rhododendron and oak grow along wooded sections. Keep a steady pace on the climb away from the valley, allowing time for breaks. On reaching Briddim, settle into your arranged village accommodation. Local homes, fields and prayer sites offer more opportunities to observe Tamang daily life before joining the Langtang route.

Day 7: Trek from Briddim to Lama Hotel

Trek — Approximately 2,470 m — 5–6 hours

Walking time Approximately 5–6 hours; allow longer for slower progress
Trek distance Approximately 12 km
Overnight altitude Approximately 2,470 m
Accommodation Teahouse at Lama Hotel
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Leaving Briddim, we join the Langtang Valley trail and continue towards Lama Hotel. Paths follow the river, with bridges and uneven ground linking the lower valley sections. Listen for birds and watch for langur monkeys among the trees.

We follow the Langtang Khola through the wooded valley. Climbs and descents continue between bridges, with uneven paths following the river's wooded banks. We reach Lama Hotel, settle into the teahouse and prepare for tomorrow's longer ascent towards Langtang Village.

Day 8: Trek from Lama Hotel to Langtang Village

Trek — Approximately 3,430 m — 5–6 hours

Walking time Approximately 5–6 hours; allow longer as needed
Trek distance Approximately 9 km
Overnight altitude Approximately 3,430 m
Accommodation Teahouse in Langtang Village
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We continue up the Langtang Valley, following the river through forest before reaching open ground. Trees become fewer as the trail climbs towards grazing areas and the houses of Langtang Village beneath the mountain slopes.

The village has rebuilt since the 2015 earthquake. Follow local guidance near memorial areas and respect residents' privacy. Today gains substantial sleeping altitude from Lama Hotel, so walk steadily and report symptoms. After arriving at the teahouse, rest before tomorrow's approach to Kyanjin Gompa.

Day 9: Trek to Kyanjin Gompa and Hike to Kyanjin Ri

Trek — Kyanjin Ri upper viewpoint, approximately 4,773 m if reached — Allow roughly 7–9 hours for the village approach and full upper viewpoint hike

Walking time Allow roughly 7–9 hours for the village approach and full upper viewpoint hike; shorter turnarounds vary
Main activity Langtang Village–Kyanjin Gompa, followed by a conditional Kyanjin Ri hike
Highest point Kyanjin Ri upper viewpoint, approximately 4,773 m if reached
Overnight altitude Kyanjin Gompa, approximately 3,870 m
Accommodation Teahouse in Kyanjin Gompa
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We walk from Langtang Village towards Kyanjin Gompa through grazing areas and past Buddhist prayer sites. After reaching the village, check into the teahouse before considering the afternoon hike.

The planned Kyanjin Ri climb adds considerable height and effort after today's approach. The guide assesses health, weather and available daylight before setting a turnaround. Clear conditions offer views towards Langtang Lirung, glaciers and neighbouring peaks.

Return to Kyanjin Gompa for the night. Rest and discuss tomorrow's Tserko Ri plan with the guide, adjusting the upper hikes according to your progress and health.

Day 10: Exploration Day and Hike to Tserko Ri

Trek — Tserko Ri, approximately 4,984 m — 7–8 hours for the return viewpoint hike

Walking time Approximately 7–8 hours for the return viewpoint hike; may take longer
Main activity Conditional Tserko Ri hike and return to Kyanjin Gompa
Highest point Tserko Ri, approximately 4,984 m
Overnight altitude Kyanjin Gompa, approximately 3,870 m
Accommodation Same teahouse in Kyanjin Gompa
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We make an early start for the Tserko Ri hike when health and conditions allow. The route climbs over exposed slopes and rough ground above Kyanjin Gompa. Altitude and the long ascent make this the itinerary's most demanding viewpoint day.

In clear weather, the viewpoint opens across the Langtang mountains and glacial valleys. Return to Kyanjin Gompa afterwards, with a shorter exploration walk available when the full ascent is unsuitable. The guide sets the turnaround and may suggest village paths or a monastery visit.

Day 11: Trek from Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel

Trek — Approximately 2,470 m — 6–7 hours

Walking time Approximately 6–7 hours
Trek distance Approximately 17 km
Overnight altitude Approximately 2,470 m
Accommodation Teahouse at Lama Hotel
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We leave Kyanjin Gompa and retrace the Langtang Valley through Langtang Village. Open grazing areas give way to wooded slopes as we descend alongside the river towards Lama Hotel.

This is a long descent, with uneven stones and steps requiring care when legs are tired. Take breaks and use poles if helpful. Forest paths bring a change from the upper valley's open ground. On reaching Lama Hotel, settle into the teahouse for the night before tomorrow's final trekking stage.

Day 12: Trek from Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi

Trek — Approximately 1,550 m — 5–6 hours

Walking time Approximately 5–6 hours
Trek distance Approximately 12 km
Overnight altitude Approximately 1,550 m
Accommodation Lodge in Syabrubesi
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Our final trekking day follows the Langtang Valley towards Syabrubesi. Forest paths, bridges and riverside sections link the route back to the town where we started walking towards the Tamang villages.

The route loses height overall, with shorter climbs and uneven sections along the way. Watch your footing on wet stones and steps. As the valley becomes warmer, village activity and the road gradually return. We reach Syabrubesi, check into the lodge and organise bags for tomorrow's drive back to Kathmandu.

Day 13: Drive from Syabrubesi to Kathmandu

Drive — Approximately 1,400 m — 6–7 hours

Driving time Approximately 6–7 hours; road conditions and traffic affect timing
Main activity Return road journey to Kathmandu
Overnight altitude Approximately 1,400 m
Accommodation 3-star hotel in Kathmandu
Meals Trail breakfast and farewell dinner; travel-day lunch as quoted

After breakfast, we leave Syabrubesi and travel by road to Kathmandu. The return journey passes river valleys, cultivated hillsides and towns before reaching the city and your hotel.

Arrival depends on traffic, weather and road conditions. After checking in, rest or explore nearby streets if time allows. A farewell dinner with a cultural programme is planned for the evening. Organise your belongings and confirm tomorrow's airport transfer.

Day 14: Departure from Kathmandu

Departure — Kathmandu, 1,400 m — Departure from Kathmandu

Read Before You Book

Before booking the Tamang and Langtang trek, consider the walking, village accommodation and high viewpoint hikes. These details help you prepare and decide whether the fourteen-day programme suits your fitness and time.

0/10 read Click topics below to explore essential briefings

Trek Difficulty and Fitness

The heritage section includes repeated climbs and descents between villages. Higher in Langtang, altitude adds to the effort, especially on Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri. Expect forest paths, steps and rough slopes on consecutive days. The viewpoint hikes can take substantially longer than the village approaches.

Previous hiking experience is helpful. First-time trekkers should build their endurance before departure and become comfortable walking uphill and downhill with a daypack.

Begin preparing around two to three months beforehand, allowing longer if you are starting from a low fitness level. Gradually combine regular walks, hill hikes and strength exercises. Practise in the boots you will wear on the trek.

Altitude and Acclimatisation

Two nights at Kyanjin Gompa allow exploration from one base. The overnight rise from Lama Hotel to Langtang Village is substantial. The guide reassesses your progress before continuing higher.

Tell your guide promptly about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not continue to a higher sleeping altitude while experiencing symptoms of altitude illness. If symptoms worsen despite resting at the same elevation, descent is necessary. Both planned viewpoint hikes remain secondary to your health.

Medical Conditions and Travel Insurance

If you have an existing medical condition, seek advice from a healthcare professional familiar with high-altitude travel before booking. Discuss your planned route and any medicines you take.

Travel insurance is required for this trek. Confirm cover for the Tserko Ri hike at approximately 4,984 metres, emergency helicopter evacuation and medical treatment in Nepal. Check exclusions, excess charges and the insurer’s assistance procedure. Carry policy details and your emergency contact number.

Accommodation and Room Facilities

The programme includes two nights in a three-star Kathmandu hotel and eleven nights in village lodges or teahouses. Room sharing and any homestay arrangements are confirmed in your quotation before departure.

Village stays offer simple rooms, with shared toilets common along the route. Facilities vary between lodges, and private rooms can be limited in busy periods. At Kyanjin Gompa, prepare for colder nights and fewer comforts than Kathmandu.

Food and Dietary Requirements

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included during the trek. Teahouse menus commonly offer dal bhat, noodles, potatoes, soups and other straightforward meals.

Tell us about allergies or dietary requirements before booking so we can discuss what can be arranged along the route. Explain any strict requirements clearly, including concerns about shared cooking equipment.

Drinking Water

Carry reusable bottles and drink boiled or appropriately treated water. Water from a clear stream or an untreated tap may still contain germs.

Boiling is the most reliable way to kill germs. If boiling is unavailable, filtration followed by disinfection offers broader protection than many portable filters alone. Follow the instructions for your treatment equipment or tablets.

Guide and Porter Support

The package includes an experienced, licensed guide and one porter for every two trekkers. Your porter carries agreed main luggage; you carry your daily essentials. Confirm weight allowances and guide language before departure.

Showers, Charging and Communication

Hot showers, Wi-Fi and device charging cost extra, with availability varying between lodges. Mobile reception and internet connections can be unreliable, particularly around upper Langtang lodges. Carry a power bank and let family know that you may be out of contact for periods of the trek.

Permits and Documents

We arrange the Langtang National Park permit, TIMS and additional permits required for the confirmed Tamang heritage route. Carry your passport, insurance details and copies of important documents. Your Nepal visa remains your responsibility before departure.

Road Delays and Extra Time

Road journeys can take longer because of traffic, repairs, weather or landslide damage. The guide checks access and discusses any changes to the programme.

Allow flexibility before international departure. The itinerary returns to Kathmandu on Day 13. Additional accommodation or transport outside the agreed programme may cost extra.

Altitude Profile of the Tamang Heritage Langtang Trek

The section crosses village hills before joining Langtang Valley. Sleeping elevations then rise from Lama Hotel through Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa, your highest overnight base. Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri are higher daytime hikes. The table separates overnight stops from those planned viewpoint visits.

Weather and Best Time for the Tamang Heritage Langtang Trek

Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, are generally the main seasons for this route. Village walking and the upper viewpoint hikes experience different conditions, with cold, cloud, rain or snowfall still possible during these months, especially higher in Langtang.

Find out the temperature ranges you will experience along the trail. Toggle between daily variation and monthly averages, and switch units below to convert between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F).

Seasonal Weather Conditions

Year-Round Climate Patterns
Season Months What to Expect
Recommended
Spring
March–May Lower hills become warmer, with rhododendrons flowering along suitable forest sections. March may retain snow on the upper viewpoint paths. April often brings comfortable walking days, while May can bring more afternoon cloud. Check higher trail conditions before the hikes.
Peak Views
Autumn
September–November Early September can retain monsoon rain and wet paths. October and November generally offer clearer mountain views after the rains. Nights become colder towards late autumn, especially at Kyanjin Gompa and on early viewpoint starts.
Cold / Quiet
Winter
December–February Cold nights, shorter daylight and snow or ice make the upper hikes more demanding. Village trails may remain accessible when higher viewpoints are unsuitable. Confirm lodge openings and prepare for changes to the planned hikes.
Flexible Pacing
Monsoon
June–August, sometimes extending into September Rain can make forest paths slippery and bring leeches. Cloud often hides the mountains. Swollen streams, landslides and damage to the approach road can interrupt walking or travel, so the programme needs greater flexibility.

These are seasonal patterns; conditions can vary from year to year and during an individual trek.

How Weather Changes Along the Route

Elevation gradients & trail exposure

Walking through Gatlang, Thuman and the lower valley can feel warm in sunshine. Conditions become colder around Kyanjin Gompa, with greater wind exposure on the slopes towards the upper viewpoints.

Even in spring and autumn, nights at Kyanjin Gompa can fall below freezing. Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri feel colder in wind, particularly during early starts. Carry warm layers, gloves and weather protection, and check conditions before each hike.

Carry warm layers, sun protection, and reliable weather protection accessible in your daypack throughout the route.

Which Season Should You Choose?

Optimal timing for trek priorities

Choose spring for warmer walking days and flowering forests along the lower route. Choose autumn, particularly October or November, if mountain visibility is your main priority.

Winter and monsoon departures require more preparation and flexibility around the higher viewpoint hikes.

Contact our mountain team to check real-time trail conditions, lodge openings, and road access for your preferred travel window.

Tamang Heritage Langtang Trek FAQs

Find clear answers to common questions about walking fitness, highest altitudes, viewpoints, accommodation, and route details.

General & Route

Can I do this trek without previous trekking experience?

Previous mountain hiking experience helps, especially for the longer viewpoint days. Prepare for consecutive climbs and descents with a daypack. First-time trekkers should discuss their fitness and hiking background before choosing this combined village and upper Langtang itinerary.

Does this itinerary include both planned viewpoint hikes?

Yes. Day 9 includes a planned Kyanjin Ri hike after reaching Kyanjin Gompa, and Day 10 is for Tserko Ri. Both outings depend on health, weather, daylight and trail conditions; shorter walks may suit the day.

Where do we stay around Kyanjin Gompa?

You spend two nights in a teahouse at Kyanjin Gompa. Both viewpoint hikes return to this village. Rooms are basic, and facilities vary between lodges. Confirm room sharing and any particular accommodation needs when requesting your quotation before departure.

How does this differ from the Tamang Heritage Trail?

The Tamang Heritage Trail focuses on villages such as Gatlang, Tatopani, Thuman and Briddim. This combined route also continues through Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa, adding two planned mountain viewpoint hikes and higher overnight accommodation before returning along the valley.

What is the highest altitude on this itinerary?

Tserko Ri is the highest planned visit, at approximately 4,984 metres. Kyanjin Ri reaches around 4,773 metres at its upper viewpoint. Your highest overnight base is Kyanjin Gompa, at approximately 3,870 metres, for two consecutive nights.

Is the exploration day for resting?

Day 10 is planned for the Tserko Ri hike, a demanding outing from Kyanjin Gompa. The guide assesses health and conditions first. A shorter walk or rest at the village may replace the full ascent.

Does being fit protect me from altitude sickness?

Fitness helps with sustained walking, but it does not prevent altitude illness. Fit and experienced trekkers can also become unwell. Report symptoms early and follow the guide’s assessment, especially before the planned Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri hikes.

What should I do if I feel unwell at altitude?

Tell your guide promptly about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not ascend to a higher sleeping altitude while experiencing symptoms of altitude illness. If symptoms worsen despite rest at the same elevation, descent is necessary.

Do I need to carry my main trekking bag?

A porter carries agreed main luggage, with one porter shared between two trekkers. You carry a daypack with water, warm layers, medicines and daily essentials. Confirm weight limits before departure and keep valuables with you.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag and down jacket?

Plan to bring suitable warm clothing and a sleeping bag for cold lodge nights. Ask about rental or loan options when requesting your quotation. Any equipment supplied by the company must be stated in your confirmed arrangements.

Can I book as a solo traveller?

You can enquire about joining a group or arranging a private trek. Send your dates so we can check availability, guide and porter arrangements, and the price for your booking. Group rates require a quotation.
