Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek Overview

Our 12-day Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek links a sunrise viewpoint with a higher, more exposed mountain ridge. You begin among the villages and forests around Ghorepani, then continue through Ghandruk and Landruk towards Mardi Himal. The route reaches the Upper Viewpoint at around 4,200 m before descending through Badal Danda and Siding.

After travelling from Kathmandu to Pokhara, you drive to Birethanti and begin walking towards Ulleri. Stone steps climb through terraced hillsides before the trail enters the forests leading to Ghorepani. An early hike to Poon Hill gives you views across the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges when the sky is clear. You return for breakfast, then continue through forest towards Tadapani before descending to Ghandruk and crossing towards Landruk.

Ghandruk and Landruk are Gurung villages, where stone houses and cultivated terraces line the hillsides. Beyond Landruk, you climb steadily through the shaded rhododendron and oak forest to Forest Camp. The next walking stage passes Low Camp and Badal Danda before reaching High Camp, with Machhapuchhre visible above the ridge when the weather is clear.

The Upper Viewpoint hike is the trek’s highest stage. You follow the ridge from High Camp before descending to Badal Danda for the night. Steep climbs, stone steps and consecutive walking days require preparation, even though technical climbing is unnecessary. Conditions on the exposed upper trail determine whether the viewpoint can be reached, so mountain weather remains part of planning.

You stay in teahouses during the mountain stages and hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara. The programme includes both trekking sections, road transfers and time for arrival and departure.

Read Before You Book

Before booking your Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek, consider the walking days, steep climbs and highest overnight stop. These details help you prepare and assess whether the itinerary suits you.

0/10 read Essential preparation tips

Trek Difficulty and Fitness

The trek is moderate, with eight consecutive walking days, steep stone steps and sustained climbs. The Ulleri staircase introduces the uphill effort, while the later Mardi section includes higher, exposed terrain. Prepare for several hours on uneven trails each day, with longer stages around both viewpoints.

Previous hiking experience is helpful. First-time trekkers should build endurance before departure and become comfortable walking uphill and downhill regularly with a daypack.

Begin preparing around two to three months beforehand, allowing longer if you are starting from a low fitness level. Gradually combine regular walks, hill hikes and strength exercises. Practise in the boots you will wear on the trek.

Altitude and Acclimatisation

No dedicated acclimatisation day is scheduled. The climb from Forest Camp to High Camp gains substantial sleeping altitude. Discuss the ascent pattern and any altitude concerns with us beforehand.

Tell your guide promptly about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not continue to a higher sleeping altitude while experiencing symptoms of altitude illness. If symptoms worsen despite resting at the same elevation, descent is necessary. Your health must guide decisions on mountain trekking stages.

Medical Conditions and Travel Insurance

If you have an existing medical condition, seek advice from a healthcare professional familiar with high-altitude travel before booking. Discuss the planned route and any medicines you take.

Arrange insurance covering trekking to at least 4,200 metres, emergency helicopter evacuation and medical treatment in Nepal. Check exclusions, excess charges and the insurer’s assistance procedure. Carry your policy details and emergency contact number throughout the trek, including the viewpoint hike and journeys.

Accommodation and Room Facilities

You stay in three-star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara and mountain teahouses during trekking. The itinerary includes seven mountain nights, with High Camp as the highest overnight stop before the viewpoint.

Expect simpler rooms and mostly shared bathroom facilities at higher stops, particularly around Forest Camp and High Camp. Room arrangements vary between lodges and during busy periods. Mountain nights can be cold even during spring and autumn.

Food and Dietary Requirements

Three meals with tea or coffee are included on Days 3–9. Day 10 includes breakfast only, with other meals at your expense.

Tell us about allergies or dietary requirements before booking so we can discuss what can be arranged along the route. Explain strict requirements clearly, including any concerns about shared cooking equipment.

Drinking Water

Carry reusable bottles and drink boiled or appropriately treated water. Stream water and untreated tap water may still contain germs that cause illness.

Boiling is the most reliable way to kill germs. If boiling is unavailable, filtration followed by disinfection offers broader protection than many portable filters alone. Follow the instructions for your water-treatment equipment or tablets.

Guide and Porter Support

A licensed, English-speaking guide and one porter for every two trekkers are included. Your porter carries the main luggage through both sections. You carry a daypack containing water, weather protection, medicines and essentials.

Showers, Charging and Communication

Hot showers, Wi-Fi and device charging cost extra, with availability varying between lodges. Mobile reception and internet connections can be unreliable, particularly along the higher Mardi ridge. Carry a power bank and let family know that contact may be limited during parts of the mountain trek.

Permits and Documents

The ACAP entry permit is included. Nepal Tourism Board requires a licensed guide and agency-issued TIMS card for this route; confirm the TIMS fee arrangement with us. Carry your passport, insurance details and copies of documents.

Road Delays and Extra Time

Roadworks, rain and landslides can affect Kathmandu–Pokhara journeys and local transfers. Keep flexibility around the travel days and allow time before your international departure.

Your viewpoint hikes depend on weather and trail conditions. Extra accommodation or transport can cost more if roads or mountain weather change the programme.

Altitude Profile of the Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek

The route climbs through Ulleri and Ghorepani, with a sunrise visit to Poon Hill before sleeping in Tadapani. You descend through Ghandruk to Landruk, then climb through Forest Camp to High Camp. The Upper Viewpoint hike is followed by a lower night at Badal Danda.

Higher Places You Visit

  • Day 5 — Poon Hill: Around 3,210 m, visited at sunrise before continuing towards Tadapani overnight.
  • Day 6 — Ghandruk: Around 1,940 m, visited after Tadapani before crossing the valley to reach Landruk.
  • Day 8 — High Camp: Around 3,540 m, your highest overnight stop before the Mardi viewpoint hike.
  • Day 9 — Mardi Himal Upper Viewpoint: Around 4,200 m, followed by descent to Badal Danda.

The descent to Landruk separates the two distinct climbs. Sleeping lower between sections does not remove the need to monitor symptoms when gaining altitude again.

Weather and Best Time for the Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek

Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, are generally the best seasons for this trek. Both offer opportunities for mountain views from Poon Hill and the Mardi ridge, although rain, cloud, cold weather and snowfall remain possible along the route.

Seasonal Weather Conditions

Season Months What to Expect
Spring March–May Days become warmer, with rhododendron flowering possible in the Ghorepani and Mardi forests. March can retain snow on the upper ridge. May can bring haze, cloud and showers, especially later in the day.
Autumn September–November Early September can retain monsoon rain. October and November generally offer clearer mountain views, with colder mornings and nights. Check the higher trail and local road conditions before departure.
Winter December–February Cold nights, shorter daylight and snow or ice can make the Mardi ridge more demanding. Viewpoint hikes may require changes, and the availability of higher lodges needs checking.
Monsoon June–August, sometimes extending into September Rain can make forest paths and stone steps slippery. Leeches are more common on wet lower trails, while cloud can hide both viewpoints. Landslides may affect roads and access trails, so allow flexibility.

These are seasonal patterns; conditions can vary from year to year and during an individual trek.

How Weather Changes Along the Route

Walking around Ulleri and Landruk can feel warm in sunshine. Ghorepani, High Camp and the Mardi ridge are colder, especially before sunrise and after sunset during the higher trekking stages.

Even during spring and autumn, nights at High Camp can fall below freezing. Early starts at Poon Hill and the exposed Mardi viewpoint require warm layers. Snow, wind or poor visibility can affect the higher trail and your hikes.

Which Season Should You Choose?

Choose spring if you would enjoy rhododendron flowering along the forest sections and warming days. Choose autumn, particularly October or November, if mountain visibility is your priority. Winter and monsoon require greater flexibility around the higher trails and road journeys.

Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek FAQs

General Information

Can I do this trek without previous trekking experience? ∨
Yes, with suitable fitness and preparation. The trek requires eight consecutive walking days, steep steps and sustained climbs. Practise hill walks with a daypack before departure and discuss altitude concerns with us. Technical climbing experience is not required.
What is the highest altitude on this itinerary? ∨
The Mardi Himal Upper Viewpoint, at approximately 4,200 metres, is the highest point. High Camp, around 3,540 metres, is your highest overnight stop. After the viewpoint hike, we descend to Badal Danda for a lower night.
Do we reach Mardi Himal’s higher base camp? ∨
No. This itinerary visits the Upper Viewpoint at around 4,200 metres, rather than the higher base-camp area. The morning hike from High Camp depends on suitable weather, trail conditions and how you are feeling at altitude.
Do we sleep at the Upper Viewpoint? ∨
No. The Upper Viewpoint is a daytime visit on Day 9. We sleep at High Camp before the hike, then descend through High Camp to Badal Danda afterwards. Poon Hill is a morning visit rather than an overnight stop.
How does this differ from the standard Mardi itinerary? ∨
This 12-day package adds the Ghorepani and Poon Hill section, followed by Ghandruk and Landruk, before joining Mardi Himal. The standard nine-day Mardi itinerary focuses on the ridge approach through Forest Camp, without the additional walks through Ghorepani and Ghandruk.
Can I book as a solo traveller? ∨
Yes. The solo starting price is from USD 1,055 per person. Send us your dates so we can check availability and confirm your quotation, including the room arrangement and any applicable supplement for your departure.
Do I need to carry my main trekking bag? ∨
A porter carries your main trekking luggage, with one porter shared between two trekkers. You carry your daypack containing water, weather protection, medicines and other daily essentials. Keep your passport, money and valuables with you.
Do I need to bring a sleeping bag and down jacket? ∨
We provide a sleeping bag, down jacket and returnable duffel bag for the trek. Bring your own boots, clothing and personal equipment. Check the supplied gear during your briefing and confirm sizes, suitability and return conditions beforehand.
Are dedicated acclimatisation days included here? ∨
No dedicated acclimatisation day is scheduled in the programme. Forest Camp to High Camp involves a substantial gain in sleeping altitude. Discuss the ascent pattern before booking and report any symptoms promptly to your guide.
Is insurance covering trekking to 4,000 metres sufficient? ∨
No. The Mardi Himal Upper Viewpoint exceeds 4,000 metres. Confirm cover for trekking to at least 4,200 metres, emergency evacuation and medical treatment in Nepal. Check exclusions, excess charges and your insurer’s assistance procedure before starting the journey.
Does being fit protect me from altitude sickness? ∨
No. Good fitness helps with the walking demands, but it does not prevent altitude illness. Fit and experienced trekkers can also become unwell. Follow your guide’s advice and report symptoms promptly instead of assuming fitness will protect you.
What should I do if I feel unwell at altitude? ∨
Tell your guide promptly about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not ascend to a higher sleeping altitude while experiencing symptoms of altitude illness. If symptoms worsen despite rest at the same elevation, descent is necessary.
