Annapurna Base Camp Trek Overview

Our 13-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill combines a sunrise walk above Ghorepani with the journey into the Annapurna Sanctuary. You first see the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges from Poon Hill at 3,210 m, then continue towards Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m, where the mountains stand much closer around your overnight stop.

After travelling from Kathmandu to Pokhara, you drive to Birethanti and begin walking towards Ulleri. The trail follows terraced hillsides before climbing stone steps into the village. Beyond Ulleri, oak and rhododendron forests lead to Ghorepani. An early hike to Poon Hill gives you time at the viewpoint before returning for breakfast and continuing towards Tadapani. Gurung and Magar communities form part of village life along this route.

From Tadapani, you descend towards the Kimrong Khola and climb to Chhomrong. The next stages follow the Modi Khola valley through Sinuwa, Bamboo and Dovan to Himalaya. Above Deurali, the forest gradually gives way to open mountain slopes. You pass Machhapuchhre Base Camp before reaching Annapurna Base Camp, the highest overnight stop on the itinerary.

The return follows the same valley to Bamboo before crossing back through Chhomrong and descending to Jhinu Danda. If the pools are open and conditions allow, you can make an optional visit to its riverside hot springs. Although this route avoids high mountain passes, long stair sections, consecutive walking days and the final altitude gain still call for good preparation.

You stay in mountain teahouses during the trek and hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara. The 13-day programme covers your arrival, walking journey, return travel and departure from Nepal.

A morning drive takes us from Pokhara to Birethanti, where the walking route begins. Your guide handles the permit checks before we continue along the Bhurungdi Khola valley. The first sections pass small villages and terraced farmland before reaching Tikhedhunga. From here, stone steps climb steeply towards Ulleri. This is a sustained uphill walk, so we take breaks and keep a steady pace. On arrival, you settle into your teahouse and have the remaining afternoon to rest after the first day on the trail.

We leave Ulleri and continue uphill through Banthanti towards Ghorepani. The route passes into the oak and rhododendron forest, with streams and shorter stair sections breaking up the walk. Flowering is possible during spring. As we gradually gain height, the air becomes cooler and the forest surrounds more of the trail. Ghorepani has several teahouses and views towards the mountains in clear weather. After checking in, prepare your warm layers and headlamp for tomorrow’s sunrise hike.

Day 5: Sunrise at Poon Hill and Trek to Tadapani

Total walking distance Approximately 13 km
Highest point Poon Hill, 3,210 m
Overnight altitude Tadapani, around 2,660 m
Accommodation Teahouse in Tadapani
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We start before dawn for the climb to Poon Hill. In clear weather, sunrise reveals the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, including Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre. The climb usually takes an hour. After returning to Ghorepani for breakfast, we continue east along a forested ridge. The trail crosses higher ground before descending towards the Banthanti area and climbing again to Tadapani. Today combines the early viewpoint visit with several more hours of walking, ending at a teahouse where we spend the night.

Trek distance Approximately 9 km
Overnight altitude Around 2,170 m
Accommodation Teahouse in Chhomrong
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We descend from Tadapani through forest and villages towards the Kimrong Khola. This stage takes you from the Ghorepani route towards the valley leading into the Annapurna Sanctuary. Some descents are steep, requiring careful footing. After crossing the river, we climb towards Chhomrong, a Gurung village spread across the hillside. In clear weather, Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre rise beyond the village. You can rest at your teahouse and explore nearby paths before tomorrow’s walk into the Modi Khola valley.

Day 7: Trek from Chhomrong to Himalaya

Walking time Approximately 6–7 hours
Trek distance Approximately 11 km
Overnight altitude Around 2,800 m
Accommodation Teahouse in Himalaya
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner

The morning begins with the long, steep stone staircase down from Chhomrong to the river. After crossing the bridge, we climb towards Sinuwa and enter the forested Modi Khola valley. Shorter climbs and descents continue beyond the village. We pass Bamboo and Dovan, following the river valley through bamboo and rhododendron forest. The path becomes quieter between the groups of teahouses. Himalaya is our overnight stop, giving you time to rest before tomorrow’s climb towards the base camps.

Day 8: Trek from Himalaya to Annapurna Base Camp

Walking time Approximately 5–7 hours
Trek distance Approximately 11 km
Main stops Deurali and Machhapuchhre Base Camp
Overnight altitude Annapurna Base Camp, 4,130 m

Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We leave Himalaya and climb towards Deurali, where the valley becomes more open. Beyond the forest, the route continues across mountain slopes towards Machhapuchhre Base Camp at 3,700 m. After a break, we follow the valley to Annapurna Base Camp. Annapurna I, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli surround the Sanctuary, with Machhapuchhre behind us. Walking becomes more demanding as altitude increases, so we take regular breaks. We stay at a teahouse at ABC, the trek’s highest overnight stop, after a substantial climb from last night’s stop. Report any symptoms promptly to your guide.

Day 9: Descend from Annapurna Base Camp to Bamboo

Walking time Approximately 6–7 hours
Trek distance Approximately 17 km
Overnight altitude Around 2,315 m
Accommodation Teahouse in Bamboo
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner

If the sky is clear, the morning gives you an opportunity to see the mountains around base camp before departure. After breakfast, we retrace the upper valley towards Machhapuchhre Base Camp and continue downhill. The walking returns to forested terrain. We pass Deurali, Himalaya and Dovan before reaching Bamboo. Although the route loses altitude, the long descent demands attention on uneven ground and steps. Trekking poles help with balance and knee comfort. At the teahouse, you can rest after one of the longer stages.

Day 10: Trek from Bamboo to Jhinu Danda

Walking time Approximately 4–6 hours, excluding any hot-spring visit

The descent leads to Jhinu Danda, where we spend the final teahouse night. If the hot springs are open and access is suitable, you can make an optional walk towards the riverside pools. Allow time for the uphill return to the village. Your guide checks conditions before discussing a visit.

Driving time Approximately 3–4 hours, depending on road conditions
Overnight altitude Around 850 m
Accommodation 3-star hotel in Pokhara

After breakfast, we leave Jhinu Danda and walk towards the road pickup point. This short section completes the trekking part of the programme before our jeep journey back to Pokhara begins. The drive passes through the hills and villages as we return to the city. Road access and travel time depend on conditions, so the pickup point may change. Once at your hotel, you have time to rest, organise your belongings or walk beside Phewa Lake after days in the mountains.

We share a farewell dinner in Kathmandu, bringing the Annapurna trekking programme to a close before tomorrow’s departure from Nepal.

Trek Difficulty and Fitness

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill is moderately difficult and does not require technical climbing skills. You walk over stone steps, steep paths and uneven ground on consecutive days. Most stages take four to seven hours, with repeated climbs and descents along the route.

Previous hiking experience is helpful. First-time trekkers should build their endurance before departure and become comfortable walking uphill and downhill with a daypack.

Begin preparing around two to three months beforehand, allowing longer if you are starting from a low fitness level. Gradually combine regular walks, hill hikes and strength exercises. Practise in the boots you will wear on the trek.

Altitude and Acclimatisation

There are no dedicated acclimatisation days on this itinerary. Day 8 gains roughly 1,330 m between Himalaya and Annapurna Base Camp, making this a substantial increase in sleeping altitude.

Tell your guide promptly about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not continue to a higher sleeping altitude while experiencing symptoms of altitude illness. If symptoms worsen despite resting at the same elevation, descent is necessary. Reaching Base Camp must remain secondary to your health.

Medical Conditions and Travel Insurance

If you have an existing medical condition, seek advice from a healthcare professional familiar with high-altitude travel before booking. Discuss your planned route and any medicines you take.

Travel insurance is compulsory for this package. Confirm that your policy covers trekking to at least 4,130 metres, emergency helicopter evacuation and medical treatment in Nepal. Check exclusions, excess charges and the insurer’s emergency assistance procedure. Carry policy details and emergency contact numbers.

Accommodation and Room Facilities

You will stay in three-star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara and teahouses along the route. City hotels are booked on a twin-sharing basis, with simpler mountain rooms and varying lodge facilities.

Higher on the route, expect basic rooms and shared bathroom facilities. Private rooms can be limited during peak periods, and sharing may be necessary. Prepare for cold nights at Annapurna Base Camp, even in spring and autumn.

Food and Dietary Requirements

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included during the trek. Teahouse menus commonly offer dal bhat, noodles, potatoes, soups and other straightforward meals.

Tell us about allergies or dietary requirements before booking so we can discuss what can be arranged along the route. Explain any strict requirements clearly, including concerns about shared cooking equipment.

Drinking Water

Carry reusable bottles and drink boiled or appropriately treated water. Water from a clear stream or an untreated tap may still contain germs.

Boiling is the most reliable way to kill germs. If boiling is unavailable, filtration followed by disinfection offers broader protection than many portable filters alone. Follow the instructions for your treatment equipment or tablets.

Guide and Porter Support

The package includes an English-speaking trekking guide and one porter for every two trekkers. Your porter carries the main trekking luggage; you carry your daypack and the items you need during the walk.

Showers, Charging and Communication

Hot showers, Wi-Fi and device charging cost extra, with availability varying between lodges. Mobile reception and internet connections can be unreliable, particularly higher on the route. Carry a power bank and let family know that you may be out of contact for periods of the trek.

Permits and Documents

We arrange the Annapurna Conservation Area entry permit (ACAP) and TIMS registration for this route. Carry your passport, insurance details and copies of important documents. Your Nepal visa remains your responsibility. The package includes your trekking guide.

Road Conditions and Extra Time

Roadworks, traffic and heavy rain can delay travel between Kathmandu and Pokhara. Road conditions can affect the jeep journey from Jhinu Danda as well.

Flights depend on weather and airline operations. Allow extra time before your international departure. Accommodation or alternative transport outside the programme may cost extra.

Altitude Profile of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek

You start walking from Birethanti above Pokhara and spend the first trekking night in Ulleri. Ghorepani and Poon Hill come before the descent towards Chhomrong. Overnight stops then rise again through Himalaya to Annapurna Base Camp, followed by the return down the Modi Khola valley.

Higher Places You Visit

  • • Day 5 — Ridge east of Ghorepani: The trail crosses higher forested ground before descending towards Tadapani.
  • • Day 8 — Machhapuchhre Base Camp: Around 3,700 m, before continuing along the upper valley to ABC.
  • • Day 8 — Annapurna Base Camp: Around 4,130 m, the highest planned point and overnight stop.

Weather and Best Time for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, are generally the best seasons for this trek via Poon Hill. Both offer favourable walking conditions and opportunities for mountain views, although rain, cloud, cold weather and snowfall remain possible along the route.

Seasonal Weather Conditions

Season Months What to Expect
Spring March–May Days gradually become warmer, with rhododendrons flowering along suitable forest sections. March can still bring snow higher on the route. April often balances walking temperatures and visibility, while May can bring afternoon cloud or rain.
Autumn September–November Early September can retain monsoon rain. October and November generally offer clearer mountain views after the rains, with cooler mornings and increasingly cold nights around base camp. Popular weeks can be busy.
Winter December–February Clear days and quieter trails are possible, but cold, shorter daylight hours, snow and ice make the upper route more demanding. Heavy snowfall and avalanche conditions can affect access above Deurali.
Monsoon June–August (to Sep) Frequent rain makes lower trails wet and slippery, with leeches possible in forest sections. Cloud can hide the mountains, while landslides or flooding may affect roads and trails. Travel plans need flexibility.

These are seasonal patterns; conditions can vary from year to year and during an individual trek.

How Weather Changes Along the Route

Walking near Ulleri and Chhomrong can feel warm in sunshine, while Ghorepani is cooler, particularly before dawn. Conditions become colder again as you climb from Himalaya towards the upper Sanctuary.

Even during spring and autumn, nights at Annapurna Base Camp can fall below freezing. Wind, cloud and damp clothing can make stops feel colder. Carry warm layers and weather protection whichever month you choose, and follow your guide’s advice.

Which Season Should You Choose?

Choose spring (March–May) if the flowering rhododendron forests around Ghorepani interest you alongside the base camp journey.

Choose autumn (October–November) if crisp mountain visibility is your main priority. Winter and monsoon require greater flexibility and preparation for more demanding conditions.

Igloo Himalaya Treks Experience

Annapurna Base Camp Trek FAQs

General & Route

Can I do this trek without previous trekking experience? ∨
Yes, provided you prepare well and have suitable fitness. Previous hiking experience helps, but technical climbing skills are unnecessary. Before departure, practise longer hill walks with a daypack and become comfortable walking uphill and downhill on consecutive days.
What is the highest altitude on this itinerary? ∨
The highest planned point and overnight stop is Annapurna Base Camp at approximately 4,130 metres. Poon Hill is lower, at 3,210 metres, and is visited during the early morning before you continue from Ghorepani towards Tadapani.
Does this itinerary include the Poon Hill sunrise hike? ∨
Yes. On Day 5, you hike from Ghorepani to Poon Hill before sunrise, then return for breakfast before trekking towards Tadapani. Clear weather offers views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges; mountain visibility depends on conditions.
Do we sleep at Annapurna Base Camp? ∨
Yes. You stay in a teahouse at Annapurna Base Camp on Day 8, then descend towards Bamboo the following day. Camping is not part of this programme. Expect basic facilities, cold nights and possible room sharing during busy periods.
Are there dedicated acclimatisation days? ∨
No. This itinerary includes Poon Hill before the Sanctuary but no acclimatisation day. The climb from Himalaya to ABC brings a substantial altitude gain. Discuss extra time before booking if you prefer a slower ascent.
Do I need to carry my main trekking bag? ∨
A porter carries your main trekking luggage, with one porter shared between two trekkers. You carry your daypack containing water, weather protection, medicines and other daily essentials. Keep your passport, money and valuables with you.
Do I need to bring a sleeping bag and down jacket? ∨
We provide a sleeping bag, down jacket and duffel bag for personal use during the trek. The supplied equipment must be returned afterwards. You remain responsible for personal items such as trekking boots, clothing, toiletries and electronics.
Is insurance covering trekking to 4,000 metres sufficient? ∨
No. A limit of 4,000 metres falls below Annapurna Base Camp at approximately 4,130 metres. Ask your insurer to confirm coverage for the full route, emergency helicopter evacuation and medical treatment, including relevant exclusions, policy limits and conditions.
Does being fit protect me from altitude sickness? ∨
No. Good fitness helps with the walking demands, but it does not prevent altitude illness. Fit and experienced trekkers can also become unwell. Follow your guide’s advice and report symptoms promptly instead of assuming fitness will protect you.
What should I do if I feel unwell at altitude? ∨
Tell your guide promptly about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not ascend to a higher sleeping altitude while experiencing symptoms of altitude illness. If symptoms worsen despite rest at the same elevation, descent is necessary.
How does the short ABC package differ from this itinerary? ∨
Our Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek — 9 Days takes a more direct route into the Sanctuary and leaves out Ghorepani and Poon Hill. This 13-day package adds the sunrise viewpoint, more village and forest walking, and a longer journey.
Can I book as a solo traveller? ∨
Yes. You can enquire about joining a group departure or arranging a private trek. Send us your preferred dates so we can check the available options and confirm the price that applies to your booking.
