14‑Day Manaslu Circuit Trek Overview

Our fourteen-day Manaslu Circuit Trek follows the Budhi Gandaki from Machha Khola into the upper Nubri Valley. Walk via Jagat, Deng, Namrung and Lho to Samagaun, where an acclimatisation day precedes the approach to Samdo and Dharamsala. Cross Larkya La at approximately 5,106 metres, then descend to Bimthang and Dharapani before returning overland to Kathmandu.

The journey begins with a road trip from Kathmandu to Machha Khola. Walking stages follow the river, crossing suspension bridges and passing cultivated hillsides, forests and village homes. Jagat marks the entrance to the Manaslu Conservation Area. Beyond Philim, the circuit continues towards Deng and Namrung. Higher in the valley, prayer walls, monasteries and stone houses reflect local Buddhist traditions, with Manaslu visible near Lho when weather allows.

We spend two nights in Samagaun, combining an acclimatisation walk with time to rest before continuing higher. The excursion depends on health, weather and group progress. Birendra Lake is one possible direction; longer hikes towards Pungyen Monastery or Manaslu Base Camp require an assessment of their demands. Returning to Samagaun keeps the sleeping elevation unchanged.

Beyond Samagaun, the landscape becomes more open on the approach to Samdo and Dharamsala. An early start precedes Larkya La, with rocky ground, possible snow and a long descent to Bimthang. The next stage continues via Tilje to Dharapani. Day 13 is the road journey back to Kathmandu via Besisahar, followed by your final departure on Day 14 after breakfast.

The package includes a licensed guide, porter support, trekking meals and permits. Mountain accommodation is basic, especially at Dharamsala. Prepare for consecutive walking days, changing weather and altitude.

14‑Day Manaslu Circuit Trek Itinerary — Day by Day

Our fourteen-day itinerary includes Kathmandu arrival and departure, one acclimatisation day in Samagaun and the crossing of Larkya La. Walking times and distances are estimates; weather, road access and group pace can affect schedules.

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Overnight altitude 1,400 m / 4,593 ft

Depending on your arrival time, rest after your flight or explore nearby Thamel. Complete permit arrangements and final packing before tomorrow’s road journey. Tell us beforehand if your international flight arrives late.

Day 2: Drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola

Scenic Drive — 870 m / 2,854 ft — Approximately 8–10 hours

Driving time Approximately 8–10 hours; traffic, repairs and weather can extend the journey
Road distance Approximately 157–165 km, depending on the road and pickup point
Main route Kathmandu → Arughat → Soti Khola → Machha Khola
Overnight altitude 870 m / 2,854 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Machha Khola
Meals Breakfast and dinner; confirm lunch coverage during the road journey. Tea or coffee with included meals; seasonal fruits after dinner as agreed.

Leave Kathmandu by road towards the Budhi Gandaki Valley. The journey passes cultivated hillsides and roadside settlements before continuing via Arughat and Soti Khola to the village of Machha Khola.

Later sections can be rough, and roadworks, damaged crossings or traffic may lengthen the drive. Keep water, snacks, medicines and documents accessible. Your team confirms the practical vehicle arrangements and current road endpoint before departure. On arrival, check into your teahouse and prepare your daypack for tomorrow’s first walking stage along the river towards Jagat.

Day 3: Trek from Machha Khola to Jagat

Trek Stage — 1,340 m / 4,396 ft — Approximately 7–8 hours

Walking time Approximately 7–8 hours; repaired sections and diversions can take longer
Trek distance Approximately 18–22 km, depending on the current trail alignment
Main route Machha Khola → Khorlabesi → Tatopani → Dovan → Jagat
Overnight altitude 1,340 m / 4,396 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Jagat
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; tea or coffee with meals; seasonal fruits after dinner as agreed

Follow the Budhi Gandaki towards Khorlabesi, Tatopani and Dovan. River crossings, stone steps and climbs between settlements make this a substantial first walking day before reaching Jagat’s teahouses.

The route includes repeated uphill and downhill sections, so take regular breaks and keep drinking water accessible. Your guide follows the locally confirmed path around repaired or damaged areas. Jagat is the main entrance to the Manaslu Conservation Area, where documents are checked. Settle into your lodge and organise what you need for tomorrow’s continued walk.

Day 4: Trek from Jagat to Deng

Trek Stage — 1,860 m / 6,102 ft — Approximately 7–9 hours

Walking time Approximately 7–9 hours; a long stage with repeated climbs and descents
Trek distance Approximately 20–22 km, depending on the connecting path
Main route Jagat → Sirdibas → Philim → Ekle Bhatti → Deng
Overnight altitude 1,860 m / 6,102 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Deng, also written Dyang
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; tea or coffee with meals; seasonal fruits after dinner as agreed

Continue from Jagat via Sirdibas and Philim, following village paths and crossing the river as the valley narrows. Forest sections, cultivated ground and bridges mark the approach to Deng, also written Dyang on maps.

Beyond Philim, stay on the Manaslu Circuit towards Deng rather than taking the branch into Tsum Valley. The long stage involves repeated climbs despite its modest finishing elevation. Start early, take breaks and settle into the teahouse after reaching the village tonight.

Day 5: Trek from Deng to Namrung

Trek Stage — 2,630 m / 8,629 ft — Approximately 7–8 hours, depending on the selected path and pace

Walking time Approximately 7–8 hours, depending on the selected path and pace
Trek distance Approximately 17–19 km
Main route Deng → Bihi Phedi → Ghap → Namrung
Overnight altitude 2,630 m / 8,629 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Namrung
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; tea or coffee with meals; seasonal fruits after dinner as agreed

Leave Deng and continue towards Bihi Phedi and Ghap, crossing bridges and passing settlements. Forest paths alternate with open stretches before a sustained climb brings you to Namrung and its lodges.

The day includes more climbing than its distance alone suggests. Keep a steady pace, allow time for breaks and follow your guide at river crossings. Stone buildings, prayer walls and Buddhist features become more noticeable along the route. Rest after reaching Namrung before tomorrow’s climb towards the village of Lho.

Day 6: Trek from Namrung to Lho

Trek Stage — 3,180 m / 10,433 ft — Approximately 4–6 hours, allowing for breaks and village stops

Walking time Approximately 4–6 hours, allowing for breaks and village stops
Trek distance Approximately 10–11 km
Main route Namrung → Lihi → Sho → Lho
Overnight altitude 3,180 m / 10,433 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Lho
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; tea or coffee with meals; seasonal fruits after dinner as agreed

Walk uphill from Namrung via Lihi and Sho towards Lho. The trail passes cultivated ground, village homes and prayer walls, with open views as you gain height. Clear weather can reveal Manaslu above the valley.

Lho’s monastery stands above the settlement, with views depending on cloud and visibility. Any visit follows local opening arrangements and customs. Today increases your sleeping altitude beyond three thousand metres, so keep the remaining afternoon gentle and report headaches, nausea or unusual tiredness immediately.

Day 7: Trek from Lho to Samagaun

Trek Stage — 3,530 m / 11,581 ft — Approximately 4–5 hours on the direct village route

Walking time Approximately 4–5 hours on the direct village route
Trek distance Approximately 8–10 km
Main route Lho → Shyala → Samagaun
Overnight altitude 3,530 m / 11,581 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Samagaun; first of two nights
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; tea or coffee with meals; seasonal fruits after dinner as agreed

Leave Lho and continue via Shyala towards Samagaun. Forested sections give way to open mountain scenery, with views of Manaslu and surrounding peaks in clear weather. The direct village route keeps today’s walk relatively short.

After reaching Samagaun, settle into your teahouse and explore nearby lanes if you feel comfortable. Stone houses, prayer walls and monastery surroundings reflect local Buddhist traditions. We spend two nights here, allowing tomorrow for an acclimatisation walk and further rest.

Day 8: Acclimatisation Day in Samagaun

Trek Stage — 3,530 m / 11,581 ft — Approximately 2–4 hours for a shorter acclimatisation walk

Walking time Approximately 2–4 hours for a shorter acclimatisation walk; longer excursions need separate assessment
Hike distance Approximately 3–6 km for a local return walk, depending on the chosen path
Main activity A suitable return walk, possibly towards Birendra Lake; destination chosen according to health and conditions
Overnight altitude 3,530 m / 11,581 ft
Accommodation Same teahouse in Samagaun; second night
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; tea or coffee with meals; seasonal fruits after dinner as agreed

Stay another night in Samagaun and take a acclimatisation walk before continuing higher. Birendra Lake is one possible direction, with the turnaround chosen according to health, weather and progress. Keep the walk unhurried and return to the village.

Longer excursions towards Pungyen Monastery or Manaslu Base Camp involve more effort and are not automatic additions. Discuss their suitability with your guide. The afternoon allows rest, washing or packing before the route continues to Samdo on the following day.

Day 9: Trek from Samagaun to Samdo

Trek Stage — 3,860 m / 12,664 ft — Approximately 4–5 hours, depending on pace and conditions

Walking time Approximately 4–5 hours, depending on pace and conditions
Trek distance Approximately 8–9 km
Main route Samagaun → upper Budhi Gandaki Valley → Samdo
Overnight altitude 3,860 m / 12,664 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Samdo
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; tea or coffee with meals; seasonal fruits after dinner as agreed

Leave Samagaun and follow the Budhi Gandaki towards Samdo. The valley becomes open, with fewer trees and views towards mountains when cloud allows. Walk steadily as the altitude increases.

Samdo is the last permanent village before Dharamsala and Larkya La. Settle into the teahouse and keep the afternoon gentle. Your guide also checks how you are feeling before discussing the next stage and pass approach.

This itinerary includes one night in Samdo. Keep warm, prepare your equipment and report symptoms immediately; continuing higher depends on your health as well as tomorrow’s weather.

Day 10: Trek from Samdo to Dharamsala

Trek Stage — 4,460 m / 14,633 ft — Approximately 4–5 hours

Walking time Approximately 4–5 hours; altitude and weather can affect pace
Trek distance Approximately 6–9 km, depending on the path and lodge position
Main route Samdo → Larkya Bazaar area → Dharamsala / Larkya Phedi
Overnight altitude 4,460 m / 14,633 ft
Accommodation Basic lodge in Dharamsala; shared rooms and limited facilities
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; tea or coffee with meals; seasonal fruits after dinner as agreed

Continue from Samdo towards Dharamsala, also called Larkya Phedi. The route climbs across exposed mountain ground, with rocky sections and increasingly cold conditions. This is your highest overnight stop, and the sleeping elevation rises by approximately six hundred metres today.

Keep the afternoon gentle and tell your guide about any headache, nausea or unusual fatigue. Prepare your headlamp, layers, gloves, water and food for an early start. Pass conditions, your health and the group’s progress determine whether tomorrow’s crossing can go ahead as planned.

Day 11: Cross Larkya La Pass and Trek to Bimthang

Trek Stage — Larkya La Pass, approximately 5,106 m / 16,752 ft — Approximately 8–10 hours

Walking time Approximately 8–10 hours; snow, ice and group pace can require longer
Trek distance Approximately 24 km, depending on the approach and trail conditions
Main route Dharamsala → Larkya La Pass → Bimthang
Highest point Larkya La Pass, approximately 5,106 m / 16,752 ft
Overnight altitude Bimthang, 3,720 m / 12,205 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Bimthang
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; tea or coffee with meals; seasonal fruits after dinner as agreed

Start before dawn for Larkya La, following rocky mountain ground towards the pass. Cold, wind and possible snow require careful walking. Clear weather offers views towards surrounding Himalayan peaks.

After the pass, descend steadily towards Bimthang. The downhill sections can be steep, uneven or icy, and tired legs make this demanding after the ascent. Take breaks, follow your guide’s instructions and allow enough daylight for the descent. Your teahouse in Bimthang provides a lower overnight stop after the crossing.

Day 12: Trek from Bimthang to Dharapani

Trek Stage — 1,860 m / 6,102 ft — Approximately 7–9 hours

Walking time Approximately 7–9 hours; a substantial final walking day
Trek distance Approximately 25–26 km
Main route Bimthang → forested Dudh Khola Valley → Gho → Tilje → Dharapani
Overnight altitude 1,860 m / 6,102 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Dharapani; final mountain night
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; tea or coffee with meals; seasonal fruits after dinner as agreed

Our final trekking day descends from Bimthang towards the Dudh Khola Valley. Forest paths, river crossings and village trails lead via Gho and Tilje before continuing to Dharapani for the night.

The lower route brings warmer conditions, although the distance and sustained descent still require effort. Take care on steps and uneven ground. Continue past Tilje to reach Dharapani for tonight’s teahouse stay. On reaching Dharapani, settle into your teahouse and organise luggage for tomorrow’s full road journey back to Kathmandu.

Day 13: Drive from Dharapani to Kathmandu via Besisahar

Scenic Drive — 1,400 m / 4,593 ft — Approximately 9–12 hours in total

Driving time Approximately 9–12 hours in total; rough roads and traffic may cause delays
Road distance Approximately 210–230 km in total, depending on the selected road
Main route Dharapani → Besisahar → Kathmandu; vehicle changes may be needed
Overnight altitude 1,400 m / 4,593 ft
Accommodation 3-star hotel in Kathmandu; second city night
Meals Breakfast; confirm road-day lunch coverage in your quotation; Kathmandu dinner at your own expense

Leave Dharapani by road for Besisahar, then continue towards Kathmandu. The first section follows a rough mountain road before joining the longer highway journey back to the city.

Traffic, roadworks and weather can affect arrival time, so keep the evening flexible. After reaching your hotel, rest, organise your belongings and confirm tomorrow’s airport transfer. The programme includes no buffer day between this return drive and international departure.

Read Before You Book

Before booking your 14-Day Manaslu Circuit Trek, consider the long walking stages, high pass and basic facilities. These details help you assess the itinerary, prepare your equipment and understand the included arrangements.

0/10 read Click topics below to explore essential briefings

Trek Difficulty and Fitness

The Manaslu Circuit requires fitness for long walking days, steep paths, stone steps and uneven ground. Stages can take seven to nine hours, while the pass crossing may require longer. The descent to Dharapani adds another substantial day. Technical climbing skills are unnecessary in suitable conditions.

Previous hiking experience is recommended. Build endurance before departure and become comfortable walking uphill and downhill on consecutive days with your loaded daypack.

Begin preparing around two to three months beforehand, allowing longer if your fitness is limited. Combine regular walks, hill hikes and strength exercises. Practise in your trekking boots, carrying a daypack similar to the one you will use.

Altitude and Acclimatisation

Samagaun includes an acclimatisation day and a second night at the same elevation. The schedule continues to Samdo and Dharamsala, with no additional acclimatisation day or weather buffer included.

Tell your guide immediately about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not continue higher with altitude symptoms. Descend if symptoms worsen despite rest. Confusion, poor coordination or breathlessness at rest require urgent assistance. Crossing Larkya La remains secondary to your health and a safe return.

Medical Conditions and Travel Insurance

If you have an existing medical condition, seek advice from a healthcare professional familiar with high-altitude travel before booking. Discuss your planned route and any medicines you take.

Travel insurance is compulsory for this package. Confirm coverage for trekking to approximately 5,106 metres, emergency helicopter evacuation and medical treatment in Nepal. Check exclusions, excess charges and the insurer’s assistance procedures. Carry your policy details and emergency contact number throughout the trip.

Accommodation and Room Facilities

You stay two nights in a three-star Kathmandu hotel and eleven nights in mountain teahouses. Confirm room sharing beforehand. Expect shared bathrooms along the route, with private facilities dependent on availability.

Facilities become simpler towards Samdo and Dharamsala. Rooms may be shared with trekkers at the highest lodge. Expect cold bedrooms, basic bedding and shared bathrooms. Showers, electricity and reliable internet are not guaranteed higher on the route.

Food and Dietary Requirements

Trekking meals include breakfast, lunch and dinner. Lodges serve dal bhat, noodles, potatoes, soups and eggs. Seasonal fruits are arranged as agreed.

Tell us about allergies or dietary requirements before booking so we can discuss what can be arranged along the route. Explain any strict requirements clearly, including concerns about shared cooking equipment.

Drinking Water

Carry reusable bottles and drink boiled or appropriately treated water. Water from a clear stream or an untreated tap may still contain germs.

Boiling is the most reliable way to kill germs. If boiling is unavailable, filtration followed by disinfection offers broader protection than many portable filters alone. Follow the instructions for your treatment equipment or tablets.

Guide and Porter Support

A licensed guide and one porter per two trekkers are included. Your porter carries the main luggage; you carry a daypack with water, weather protection, medicines and valuables. Confirm luggage allowances before departure.

Showers, Charging and Communication

Hot showers, Wi-Fi, laundry and device charging cost extra, with availability varying between lodges. Mobile reception and internet can be unreliable, particularly near Dharamsala. Carry a power bank and headlamp, and tell family that you may be out of contact during some parts of the trek.

Permits and Documents

We arrange the Manaslu restricted-area permit, Manaslu Conservation Area entry and Annapurna Conservation Area entry. Confirm applicable registrations and document deadlines. Carry your passport, valid Nepal visa, insurance details and copies of documents throughout the journey.

Road Delays and Extra Time

Flood damage, landslides and roadworks can affect the approach and return journeys. Snow or ice may delay Larkya La, even during the trekking seasons.

Allow extra time before international flights. Changes, additional accommodation, meals and alternative transport outside the programme can cost extra. No buffer day is included.

Altitude Profile of the 14‑Day Manaslu Circuit Trek

Overnight stops rise from Machha Khola via Jagat, Deng, Namrung and Lho to Samagaun. After two nights, continue to Samdo and Dharamsala, the highest sleeping place. Larkya La is a daytime crossing, followed by descent to Bimthang. The table separates overnight elevations from daytime visits.

Weather and Best Time for the 14‑Day Manaslu Circuit Trek

Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, generally suit the Manaslu Circuit. Both offer opportunities for mountain views, although cloud, snow, ice and cold remain possible around Larkya La. Check current road, trail, lodge and pass conditions before choosing dates.

Find out the temperature ranges you will experience along the trail. Toggle between daily variation and monthly averages, and switch units below to convert between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F).

Seasonal Weather Conditions

Year-Round Climate Patterns
Season Months What to Expect
Recommended
Spring
March–May Lower trails become warmer, with possible rhododendron flowers in forested sections. March can retain winter snow near the pass. Warm clothing and current checks remain necessary for Larkya La throughout spring.
Peak Views
Autumn
September–November Early September can retain monsoon rain and damaged access. October and November often offer clearer mountain views, with colder nights later in the season. Check roads, repaired trails and pass conditions before departure.
Cold / Quiet
Winter
December–February Severe cold, snow, ice and shorter daylight can prevent the pass crossing. High lodges may close. Local conditions decide whether this itinerary can operate; a winter crossing is not guaranteed.
Flexible Pacing
Monsoon
June–August, sometimes extending into September Rain can damage roads, bridges and lower trails. Landslides, swollen rivers and cloud can disrupt the programme. The higher valleys do not remove weather problems on the approach and exit roads.

These are seasonal patterns; conditions can vary from year to year and during an individual trek.

How Weather Changes Along the Route

Elevation gradients & trail exposure

Walking near Machha Khola and Jagat can feel warm and humid. Conditions become colder towards Lho, Samagaun, Samdo and Dharamsala, before dawn and after sunset, with wind increasing the chill.

Even in spring and autumn, higher lodge nights can fall below freezing. The exposed pass approach and descent may feel colder in wind. Carry warm layers, gloves and weather protection, and check conditions before leaving Dharamsala for Larkya La.

Carry warm layers, sun protection, and reliable weather protection accessible in your daypack throughout the route.

Which Season Should You Choose?

Optimal timing for trek priorities

Choose spring for warming days and flowering lower forests. Choose October or November for mountain views after the rains.

Winter snow can close the pass, while monsoon rain damages roads and bridges. Both seasons need flexibility and current local checks.

Manaslu Circuit Trek FAQs

Find clear answers regarding Larkya La crossing, teahouse accommodation, restricted-area permits, and altitude health for this 14-day Himalayan trek.

General & Route

Can I do this trek without previous trekking experience?

Previous hiking experience helps with this challenging circuit. Expect long stages, steep paths, basic lodges and demanding walking at altitude. First-time trekkers should build endurance and discuss their experience with us before deciding whether this itinerary is suitable.

Do we camp on Larkya La Pass?

No. The itinerary uses teahouses, with the highest overnight stay at Dharamsala before the pass crossing. Day 11 crosses Larkya La and descends to Bimthang for the night. There is no planned campsite or overnight stay on the pass.

Are acclimatisation days complete rest days?

No. Day 8 usually includes a suitable walk above or near Samagaun, followed by another night in the village. The destination and turnaround depend on health and conditions; longer base camp excursions require separate assessment.

Does this itinerary include Kathmandu sightseeing or a buffer?

No sightseeing or buffer day is included. Day 1 covers arrival and preparation as timing permits; Day 13 is the drive from Dharapani to Kathmandu, and Day 14 is departure. Arrange additional days if you want sightseeing or contingency time.

Are all trekking meals included in this package?

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included during the trek, with tea or coffee accompanying meals. Seasonal fruits after dinner are arranged as agreed. Kathmandu hotel breakfasts are included; other city meals and personal extras cost extra.

Do I need to carry my main trekking bag?

A porter carries your main trekking luggage, with one porter shared between two trekkers. You carry your daypack containing water, weather protection, medicines and other daily essentials. Keep your passport, money and valuables with you.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag and down jacket?

A sleeping bag, down jacket and duffel bag are supplied for this trek. Confirm suitability, collection and return arrangements before departure. Bring your personal boots, clothing, medicines, toiletries and electronics, and carry daily essentials in your daypack.

Can I book as a solo traveller?

You can enquire about a guided solo booking or joining a group. Restricted-area access requires agency arrangements and a licensed guide. Send your preferred dates so we can confirm permit eligibility, availability and your quotation.

What is the highest altitude on this itinerary?

The highest point is Larkya La Pass, at approximately 5,106 metres. Dharamsala, around 4,460 metres, is the highest overnight stop. Cross the pass during the day before descending to Bimthang to sleep at a lower elevation.

Is insurance covering trekking to 5,000 metres sufficient?

A 5,000-metre limit falls below Larkya La at approximately 5,106 metres. Ask your insurer to confirm coverage for the full itinerary, emergency helicopter evacuation and medical treatment in Nepal. Check exclusions, excess charges and assistance procedures before departure.

Does being fit protect me from altitude sickness?

No. Fitness helps with the long walking stages but does not prevent altitude illness. Fit and experienced trekkers can become unwell. Follow the acclimatisation schedule, report any symptoms immediately and avoid assuming that fitness makes further ascent safe.

What should I do if I feel unwell at altitude?

Tell your guide immediately about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not continue higher with symptoms. Descend if symptoms worsen despite rest. Confusion, poor coordination or breathlessness at rest require urgent assistance and an immediate descent.
